New Warhammer Quest: Cursed City Preview (Part 2)

Welcome back to part 2 of our Warhammer Quest: Cursed City Preview! In today’s post we will be introducing the Agents of Defiance and the Overlords of Ulfenkarn. Each character has their own individual motives and agendas behind their presence in the game which helps to better understand the plot of the Cursed City.

Meet the Characters

The Agents of Defiance are eight unique heroes fighting to bring salvation to the city of Ulfenkarn. Each hero has their own set of weapons and abilities, combine those together and they may just be able to save the city from the wolf.

Jelson Darrock

Jelson Darrock was once a part of the Order of Azyr, an organization of witch hunters and their associates who ruthlessly seek out and destroy heretics (or anyone they even midly suspect of heresy). They are often feared for their power and brutality; Darrock’s conduct saw him expelled from this organization, though it has not been revealed why. His career change saw him hunting vampires and armed with the Ardent Blade as well as a long-barreled rifle. He also carries carved wooden steaks that will burst into flames when piercing the flesh of undead creatures. Jelson holds a weapon of judgement, so firing bullets from his long-barreled rifle can punch through armor and bone. Best used for killing lower wound models or leaving a mortal wound on the bigger models.

Qulathis the Exile

Qulathis is an executioner who is determined to hunt down the vampire that slaughtered her kin. Starting at level 0, she will have to gain experience and level up by successfully completing journeys throughout Ulfenkarn.

When a hero level increases, they will gain a powerful trait. For example, when Qulathis reaches level 5 she will gain quick reflexes, swift, disciplined, assassin and eliminator traits.

Emelda Braskov

Emelda Braskow is a Human Knight of Azyr from Mournhold. She once crossed paths with Radukar the Wolf and her army was destroyed. As an act of vengeance, she has sworn to slay the vampire or die in the failure of doing so.

‘This is my city. I fought for it outside the walls, and by Sigmar’s blood i’ll fight for it inside, even if I have to drive my sword right through it’s black and corrupted heart.’

Dagnai Holdenstock

Dagnai has returned to the city in search of riches rather than revenge. The dwarf has found an opportunity to seek some treasure that lies with the corpses.

‘Keep her steady, lads, we’ll be back before nightfall. And if any of those winged fitlings come for you, club ’em with your gunstocks. Aethershot’s expensive stuff, you know.’

Glaurio Ven Alten III

Gluaro is the last surviving noble of the ven Alten bloodline, after he slays his three cousins, from the city of Ulfenkarn.

Seeking to avenge his family’s honour, the young duelist starts by slaying his three cousins because they received the blood kiss and turned into vampires.

He has spent many hours training in swordsmanship and we can only hope that it will be put to good use and contribute towards saving the Cursed City.

Cleona Zeitengale

Cleona came to the city of Ulfenkarn as a member of the Cult of the Comet to give out teachings of her missionary order. Although trying to warn them, the citizens of Ulfenkarn would ignore her and now she must summon the power of Sigmar to win back the city.

‘It’s written right here in True Azyrite. “The mortis pull, the sinking sands, the broken clock strikes twelve.” What part of that don’t you understand?

Octren Glimscry

Octren was once a friend and worked alongside Torgillius the Chamberlain. Spending many years in the Realm of Death, he would seek for the secrets of immortality.

However, the chamerblain stole the research and Octren now seeks to track him down and end his former friends experiments.

Octren can unleash a Withering Hex, a spell to slow down any units that get too close, rendering them easy pickings for your allies.

Brutogg Corpse-Eater

Brutogg Corpse-Eater, does exactly that, eats corpses. He has arrived in Ulfenkarn to prove his strength as an ogor and will happily snack on flesh, bone, zombies and even mummified cadavers!

‘I ate one of them gheists once. Waste of time, don’t fink i’ll bovver next time. Oi, grab that dead vulture out of the gutter, would yer?”

Overlords of Ulfenkarn

Cursed City provides us with 42 models representing the villains of Ulfenkarn. Each offer a set of challenges that the agents of defiance will need to overcome to save the city.

Gorslav the Gravekeeper

Gorslav the Gravekeeper is undoubtedly a creepy looking model that burns his victims alive and unleashes them as vampires.

He oversees the graveyards in the corpse-gardens where he is certain to keep his victims as he buries them alive.

So, that explains the massive spade used not only to bury but also dig out his victims.

The lack of communication from Gorslav leaves lots of questions about how he turned into a glorified zombie.

Watch Captain Halgrim

After the Necroquake, Watch Captain Halgrim tried to pledge his men to Radukar in exchange for the Soulblight Curse. Soublight vampires are blood thirsty creatures with inhuman strength.

Watch Captain Halgrim was betrayed by his men, they tied him up and held him captive until he was taken to the sewers and fed to Corpse Rats.

Upon his resurrection he was raised by necromancers to serve as Watch Captain as a Deathrattle skeleton, leading the city’s Ulfenwatch. He now follows every word of his master’s command and operates in the Vharngate.

Torgillus the Chamberlain

Torgillius is an expert on grave-sand and can use the material as a means of defense against attack. After he had stolen Octrens research on immortality, he joined with the dark ogor Vampire Lord Radukar the Wolf.

Torgillius sees and hears all and is able to see through the eyes of Corpse-Rats to spy on the entirety of Ulfenkarn.

He is also the commander of the bat and rat swarms and operates from the Barrowmark, a corrupted hall of learning.

Vyrkos Blood-Born

Surviving nobles were given the opportunity to join the vampire lord in exchange for their loyalty and the blood kiss.

Survivors ultimately transformed into the creatures known as Vyrkos Blood-born. These vampires surround the city of Ulfenkarn and will serve Radukar the Wolf.

Those who question the dominance of the vampire lord will be assassinated as Vyrkos Blood-born stalk the streets in search of prey.

It is likely they may share a bloodline with Glaurio Ven Alten III as three of his cousins willingly took the blood kiss.

Radukar the Wolf

Radukar secured the blood kiss by killing wolf Vilnas with his bare hands and claiming an ensorcelled barrow-blade.

Wolf Vilnas was a double-headed wolf, as we can see Radukar carries these on his shoulders.

He is a vampire of ancient power, possessed by an uncontrollable rage that drives him to feast on all who dare challenge or defy him.

There we have it, all the characters of the Cursed City. I don’t know about you, but now I’m even more excited!

New Warhammer Quest: Cursed City Preview (Part 1)

The Cursed City of Ulfenkarn

We are very excited to dive into the new Games Workshop board game set within the Age of Sigmar universe, Warhammer Quest: Cursed City. The story begins after the Necroquake, the explosion that caused the undead to rise from the Mortal Realms. These events drove legendary warrior, Radukar the Wolf, to become infused with rage and begin a murderous rampage across the city, slaughtering everything in his path.

Mournhold was founded during the Age of Myth and changed to Ulfenkarn by Radukar the Wolf, meaning ‘the wolf’s feast’. When the Dark Gods invaded the Mortal Realms, the city was isolated and survivors agreed to find a potential saviour, one they would soon regret.

There is multiple references to wolves in the trailer, as well as a full moon, we can hear during the trailer ‘know this wolf, you’re not the first monster we have hunted’. My guess is that these references are referring to Radukar the Wolf who once saved the city. However, his new found power has left Ulfenkarn surrounded by corpses, vampires and slaves.

Warhammer Quest: Cursed City will be available to pre-order from the 3rd of April and will be released on the 10th of April 2021.

  • Warscroll Book
  • Counters & Tokens

  • Secret Envelope

On the 29th of March Warhammer gave us the video the gameplay release. We now know that the game is split up into three different journeys with different victory conditions: Hunt, Deliverance & Scavenge. Each turn has also been split up into five different phases: The Journey Phase, Destiny Phase, Initiative Phase, Activation Phase & Event Phase. Using all the information we can find, we have explained these phases for you so you know exactly what to expect.

Cursed City Gameplay Overview

You can play Cursed City solo or with up to another 3 players for a fully cooperative dungeon-crawling adventure. Below is an overview of how to play the game:

  1. Select one player to give the lead token to. The leader will have the responsibility of actions such as moving hostile models and rolling for attacks.
  2. Choose which journey you want to take. Each one has different victory conditions: Hunt, Deliverance & Scavenge.
  3. Pick your fighters and give each player four activation dice.
  4. Set up the game board based on the journey you have chosen.
  5. Draw encounter cards equal to the number of the object markers.
  6. Use the models listed on the first line of each encounter card.
  7. Each turn is split into five phases: Journey Phase, Destiny Phase, Initiative Phase, Activation Phase & Event Phase.
  8. In the event of a crisis occurring, the leader must select a hero to deal with it. Successful heroes will get rewards, but failing can be bad news for the city.
  9. After the crisis, the hero will return and continue the journey to save the city.
  10. Each journey has a different victory condition. To win the hunt journey, slay 10 hostile champions and be careful of levels of fear and influence.
  11. After you complete your journey, heroes can recuperate from injuries.

Journey Phase

The Journey Phase is split up into two steps, the nightfall step and the quest step. During the nightfall step, the nightfall token will be moved one space clockwise around the board indicating the passage of time. This is followed by the quest step which is followed on specific journeys allowing players to complete bonus objectives and actions.

Destiny Phase

During the Destiny Phase, destiny dice will generate for heroes to use later in the game. Roll all five of the destiny dice and discard any doubles, triples, quadruples or quintuples. The rest of the dice (if any) will be moved to the white space on the board so they are usable by the whole party.

Initiative Phase

For this phase, activation dice are generated so players can perform actions later in the turn and the order in which heroes and villains act will be determined. Each player will roll one activation die for each empty space on their character cards. The better your roll, the better the activation will be. The leader makes an initiative deck which determines who goes in which order during the activation phase. To make the deck, shuffle every initiative card for your heroes and hostile group in play. Drawing one at a time, place them from left to right on the combat track to determine the order. If you do not like this order, you can perform a Gambit which requires you to spend one of your activation dice.

Activation Phase

In the Activation Phase, heroes and villains will take it in turns to move around, fight and use abilities. Each hero can perform one of six actions by spending one activation dice: Move, Run, Search, Recuperate and Unique Abilities. As you slay more enemies, your hero will become inspired, making them better fighters. During attacks you can use treasure cards to defend your hero from being wounded. For every space taken by a wound token, you will lose an activation dice. If all spaces are taken by wound tokens, the hero will be out of action the next time they receive damage. Once all heroes and hostiles have activated the next phase commences.

Event Phase

This phase reveals whether your journey will end or continue. The leader will roll the dice on the event table where some heroes may be returned, a hostile gets free moves, or disaster occurs. Once this phase is complete, the Journey Phase will begin again to start another turn.

Get together with 2-8 players aged 14 and over and receive six secret missions each to trick your fellow players into doing something odd.

We recommend you choose the time to complete your missions wisely. If the other players figure out they are being tricked, you have failed your mission. For example, one mission involves you getting another player to high-five you twice in one day. The first player to win three of their secret missions becomes the sneaky winner.

OK Play

If you are looking for a game that is simpler and easier to play, OK Play is the the one! This portable game is ideal for travel and provides enough tiles for up to 4 players. Recommended for children aged 8 years and above, though this is one all the family can join in on, you will compete against each other to get five of your tiles in a row. Like the famous Connect 4, tiles are placed either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.

The central base for the colourful tiles has a karabiner style key ring to ensure this game is portable and can easily be clipped onto your bag. The plastic tiles are waterproof and easily washable. This means you can play this game anywhere you wish whether that is the beach, local park, or garden.

Muffin Time

The perfect game if you are looking for a good laugh! Muffin Time proudly introduces you to Desmond the Moon Bear, Mine Turtle, Skateboard Cow, the Kid Who Likes Trains and obviously Mr Muffin himself. They have left the screen to take part in your game night!

In this card game for 2-4 Players, be sure to expect some hilarious sketches. Though be warned, some include dark humor and therefore this game is only for players aged 13 years and above. Muffin Time is an extremely unpredictable game, with only the cards deciding your fate, absolutely anyone could be the winner.

Attention all movie lovers! We are almost certain that everyone misses Blockbuster, so we are more than happy to announce that it has returned for good in the form of a board game!

In the Blockbuster Game players aged 12 and over can now take part in the head-to-head movie buzzer battle. The winner of this battle will then keep three or more friends entertained while you describe your movie card to the rest of the team by using either a word, a quote, or acting it out.

Eldritch Horror Board Game Review

You stayed in London overnight, getting a much needed rest after the fight you had with a violent cultist. All night you dreamed nightmarish visions of the Ancient Ones. Despite feeling tired and sore, you can’t stop any longer. You’ve heard a rumour that the dark forces are massing in North America. As one of the only people physically and mentally equipped to deal with the situation, you buy a ticket to grant you passage across the Atlantic and settle in for your journey. During the night, you are woken from a restless sleep by a low humming sound. Ignoring the dread in the pit of your stomach, you wander up to the main deck and step out into the cold Atlantic night air.

Looking down into the water you see a luminous mass, pulsating as though living, eerily suspended beneath the surface of the water. Pain grips you suddenly, doubling you over as you bring your hands to your head. Something is forcing its way into your mind. You catch a slight glimpse of an undulating beast before you regain your composure. You’ve stopped the forces from penetrating your consciousness, but at a small cost to your sanity. Your relief at surviving this ordeal is short lived, however, as the ship’s captain tells you a telegram from your colleague in Russia has informed you that evil is stirring there and your help is needed. You feel the need to rest, but you know that once your lead in America is investigated, you’ll have to leave for Russia straight away.

This is how a turn plays out in Eldritch Horror, Fantasy Flight’s Lovecraftian board game of cooperative global investigation from its Arkham Files range. For one to eight players, each player chooses from twelve investigators to play as and are then tasked with saving the world from the invading forces of the Ancient Ones. The core box includes four Ancient Ones to play against, each with their own unique threats and difficulty rating, which in turn can be customised by including or omitting certain mythos cards.

At its core, Eldritch Horror shares a lot of its mechanics with Pandemic. Players who are familiar with Pandemic will have no problems picking up the rules. Each round is split into three phases, the action phase, the encounter phase and the mythos phase. During the action phase, investigators carry out two actions. This could be moving one space, gaining a travel ticket to extend movement, resting to recover sanity or health, trading items with other investigators or acquiring item cards from the reserve. The encounter phase has each investigator draw an encounter card. Depending on your location in the world, you draw from one of many encounter decks, each one containing flavour text to be read aloud describing the encounter you must survive. In the mythos phase, one card is drawn which describes the nefarious antics of the ancient one and what its effects will be. Many of these can change the game in an instant, making things much harder for the investigators!

During play, portals will open up in major cities across the world and allow creatures and followers to cross over into our dimension. Combat is solved with dice rolls, the number of which you can roll depends on the abilities of the investigator you are playing as. Facing these beings doesn’t just effect your health, but also your sanity. Lose either one and your investigator is out of the game!

Although you will work together to beat the game, what makes Eldritch Horror shine is the personal journey that each of the investigators will go on. Every encounter will take its toll on you mentally, every fight will physically scar you, and should you run out of time and the doom track reaches zero, the ancient one will awaken and bring about the end of world. At times it’s tense, at times it’s spooky, but it’s always exciting. This game is a must have for any gamer who likes Lovecraft.
